Crystal Saga: Standing Out as a Browser Based MMORPG

It takes a good company to create a game that players online can try out and play. It takes even even greater company who is willing to dedicated and commit themselves to a passion that binds them together to manage an MMO that will last for years and years. Reality Squared Games, developer and publisher of Crystal Saga, has managed to open up 32 servers in their leading browser-based MMORPG since launching into open beta last September 2011. That’s quite an impressive achievement considering how other browser-based MMORPGs are doing in the market. Crystal Saga is already following in the footsteps of the world’s #1 leading browser-based MMORPG, RuneScape, developed and published by Jagex. The difference? Runescape has been out since 2001 and has double the servers Crystal Saga has as well as more in-game features. However, going from 1 server to 32 servers in less than 6 months puts Crystal Saga on a good path to follow Runescape’s accomplishments.

There are many browser-based MMOs out there. Crystal Saga was and still is a leading and, if not, one of the best ranking RPG MMOs in the browser-based category. With 2 million registered users and an active userbase that is growing on weekly basis, Reality Squared beings out a game that answers a common question asked by most gamers: “what MMORPG can I play that has an active community?” Reality Squared Games focuses on promoting various in-game and forum activities as well as fixing bugs and doing content updates on a weekly basis. Many users would ask the following question: “why would I want to play a browser MMO when I can play a client that has better graphics?” This has been a question most game publishers and developers have been trying to answer in the past decade. A lot of times, the common answer is that browser games are constantly pushing the boundaries and breaking the limits on what browser games can do in comparison to client games. Browser MMOs have the advantage of less lag and taking up less computer resources. For those who don’t have a decent computer, they can play browser MMOs. It’s also easier for those who have to-notch gaming computers because you don’t have to alt+tab to go from the game to your regular window programs.

Modern technology has allowed programmers to develop, implement, and manage better ways to create games that will serve gamers more efficiently. While client-based games still serve as a favorite option for most gamers, browser-based gaming is paving its way to the top. Some Browser MMOs have even made it so that you can barely tell the difference between a client MMO and a browser MMO by adding a full screen option, which will allow gamers to play a game in full screen, a feature that makes most client MMOs stand out. Many browser-based games are being put into the gaming market including Monster MMORPG (very similar to Pokemon), Spiral Knights, and Pirate Galaxy. However, when it comes to straightforward, all out RPG, Crystal Saga leads the way in focusing on graphics and gameplay that pulls 3D gaming into a browser.

Crystal Saga focuses on anime-based graphics while trying to implement modernized 3D visual design and gameplay into the game. Players, nowadays, are familiar with MMO games that use anime-based visual designs so Crystal Saga focuses on what players are most familiar with. How does an MMO like Crystal Saga stand out? It’s easy. Weekly updates, which involves bug fixes, activities, and continuous additional content, as well as buzz on their social media sites. Reality Squared Games strongly enforces against spammers and bots and has recently implemented an anti-spammer system into Crystal Saga. You will never find spammers or bots in the game. For those who find a spammer or bot are encouraged to send a report to Reality Squared games either directly or on the forums. One of Crystal Saga’s greatest features is an auto-attack bot card. Most gamers would accuse this feature as being a bot. Technically, it is a bot, however, it does not abide by what most illegal bots do. The auto-attack bot is a bot card, which can be purchased for a very low price in the in-game cash shop, that will allow a player to go away from their keyboard and their character will auto attack any monsters that are nearby without the user having to pay attention to the game. This has its own risks. If the user is not watching the game closely, their character in the game might die. However, it’s still a feature in the game that is used by many players.

Crystal Saga continues to succeed as a browser-based MMORPG and as time flies by, it can be guaranteed that more is still to come as Crystal Saga paves its way to success in the years to come. You can try Crystal Saga at their official website,http://cs.r2games.com.

Chinese EVE Online to Shut down Servers

EVE Online’s Chinese publisher CDC Games announced today (Jan. 17 local time in China) that the game will be open to players free of charge from Feb. 1 and will stop its commercial service in China on Mar. 31. That means CDC Games’ cooperation with Iceland-based CCP on EVE Online will soon end, and CCP will announce the game’s new publisher in China before the servers are shut down formally.

EVE Online

EVE Online produced by CCP is a star wars-themed online game set in sci-fi space and allows players to travel among over 5,000 planets on their own spaceships. CDC Games used to have high expectations of the game, but now it is giving up on the game.

In October last year, CDC Games’ parent company - CDC Corporation filed for bankrupt, but EVE Online continued its normal service owing to the Corporation’s application for bankrupt protection. Anyway, CDC Games didn’t disclose whether EVE Online’s server shutdown was caused by the Corporation’s bankrupt.

Diablo 3 Release Date Leaked by Best Buy?

Right on the heels of Blizzard’s celebrating of the 15th anniversary of the Diablo series , Blizzard’s Jay Wilson said the dev has “almost done” with the eagerly-anticipated Diablo 3. According to Best Buy, America’s big box electronics retailer, the “almost done” means Diablo 3 will hit shelves on February 1st.

Diablo 3

According to the in-store ad display that popped up at a Best Buy in Rochester, Minnesota, Diablo 3 will launch at midnight on February 1st along with a digital countdown timer. The tweet contained the image had been pulled but thanks to Joystiq who managed to snag the image before it went down. Joystiq also tracked down Best Buy and confirmed the display is real. More over, Best Buy web storealso lists the game as coming on February 1st.

Diablo 3

To make things even interesting, Gameplay, one of the UK-retailer, also shows a February 3rd release date, which would fall in line with standard UK operating procedure of Friday releases.

Is this legit? According to the latest update from Joystiq, Blizzard community manager Micah “Bashiok” Whipple responded on the Twitter, “We can’t really keep every individual retail shop from making up a date,” as well as “Retailers will not know a date until it’s officially announced through a press release.” The official word we last heard from Blizzard was “early 2012″, therefore, no solid date has been confirmed. Still waiting for the official announcement.

MidEast Crisis 2 Receives Final Game Expansion

Utrecht, the Netherlands – December 27, 2011 – Game developer ISOTX today announced the release of the final extensive game expansion for the real time strategy mod MidEast Crisis 2. The update includes the addition of an entirely new faction: the UN Peacekeepers, a complete overhaul of the game website and new game maps.

New faction

The UN Peacekeepers have a wide range of units at their disposal, including the M1A3 Abrams tank, medibots (the latest in medical technology), the mighty Brummbar supertank, the Requiem (an advanced tactical bomber), F-35s, and the Comanche attack helicopter. Although the UN Peacekeeper units are state-of-the-art, they are also very expensive. As a result, the UN forces are often outnumbered on the battlefield by the other factions. But rest assured, these highly trained units can easily stand their ground in hostile situations. The UN Peacekeepers play quite differently to the other factions, being well suited to a more defensive style of play.

MidEast Crisis 2

Released in 2009, MidEast Crisis 2 is one of the most popular total conversion mods for Command & Conquer 3 – Tiberium Wars. The game takes place in the near future, where a war has broken out between the Israeli Defence forces and the Guardians of Islam, while a UN peacekeeping force is stuck between both camps. It is up to the player to pick a side and take command.

Iron Grip: Marauders - “Friendly Fire”

Utrecht, the Netherlands – December 20, 2011 – Just before the holidays, game studio ISOTX announces new features in Iron Grip: Marauders. After launching a big expansion just a few weeks ago, ISOTX wants to spoil their players with even more new features such as… ALLIANCES and Factions!!  Alliance  A brand new feature, which is already embraced by the gamers, is the option to join friends in an Alliance. Players can make their own Alliance with a unique name and flag to stand out from the crowd. Additionally, the Alliance possesses a private chat board that can only be used by members. By donating gold, the number of Alliance members can be increased and extra radio tapes can be purchased to improve the private chat. The rank is based on the current standings on the leaderboard of all the members combined.  Factions  Before the latest expansion the only opponent you could fight was militia. The introduction of the Player vs. Player (PvP) mode added a whole new dimension to the game, allowing players to fight against each other. The current expansion features two additional opponent factions, which can be encountered during raids, smuggle missions and Boss attacks. For instance: you might accidentally stumble upon the Mortt Queen with her followers. She is tougher, slimier and more unpredictable than ever before. Another new faction to fight against is the Baron faction. You might have already met some of these units recently during the Trader quests. The entire faction will be expanded with multiple new Baron units such as the Baron Barrage Cannon, the Baron Artillery Walker, the Baron Rocket Tank and many others.  New Units  Besides the new units for the new opponent factions, there are also new units to use in your own army. The long-awaited and feared Ironclad Walker will make its debut. Next to the Ironclad Walker some existing units are available at higher levels, allowing for more researchable units and more strategic options to choose from during your battles.  PVP Medals  PvP medals have been introduced to reward gamers for their PvP victories. The ‘Serial Killer’ and ‘Psycho Killer’ medals can be earned by beating three other gamers and by winning ten or more PvP battles.   Friend invite  The friend invite feature is a subtle addition to the game, whereby you can easily invite your friends to play. Just send an email from your profile page to your friends to play Iron Grip: Marauders. As a reward, the player who sends the invitation gains extra resources.  Establish an Alliance together, team up against Bosses and defeat all the different factions together!

Games for over the holidays

Every holiday season I find myself with a bit too much time on my hands. Sure I could do something useful, like try to learn a new language, bang out the old guitar and learn a few songs or something like that. But usually what I do is jump on random sites trying to find casual games I can play for a few days and not get into them too much.

Since I think I’m not the only one with this “problem” I thought I’d make a little list of games that you can have fun with without the hours of grind and dedication behind them. So lets start:

1. Team fortress 2

It’s free it’s fun, it’s been around for a while. You can’t go wrong with this game if you’re bored and you like FPS games.

2. Brawl Busters

I’ve made a little blog post about this game a while ago and I’m still excited about this game. You get right in the midst of action right from the start. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone during and past holiday season.

3. Soldat

A fairly unknown game, which I’ve played since 2002 and is a mix of Worms and Quake. It’s very similar to Liero if you ever heard about it. Anyways, fun fun fun!

4. Metal Assault

A game sort-of similar to Soldat, but more MMO-ish. Has a zombie mode which is always awesome, attack vehicles and cannons.

Fun game!

5. Rusty Hearts

It’s fun, it’s from PWE, it’s decent for over the holidays. A MMO without the bleeding grind with some flashy effects and stylish graphics. Worth the button press and clicks.

HAVE FUN AND A HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2012!

5 Other Movies That Could Be MMOs

With the imminent arrival of that game that’s based on a venerable old movie favorite…what’s its name again? Oh right, Star Wars: The Old Republic, that’s it. Anyway, with SWTOR finally hitting the airwaves, it made me start to think of other movies that I believe would make terrific MMOs, games that have a fairly clear set of factions that could probably make the transition to a game world inhabited by thousands of players at the same time. All of the titles I’ve listed would bring a breath of fresh air into the increasingly dull line of MMOs that exist today.

The most important factor in these titles would be giving the players the flexibility to be on either or any side of the factional warfare they would have to include rather than limiting all players to the somewhat tiresome “good vs evil” thing as it currently exists in most MMOs. It’s time for massive scale PvP and each of these movies represents just that. They carry with them the hope that someday someone will be able to pull it off.

Without further ado, here is my list of Other Movies that Should be MMOs:

5) Die Hard – Terrorists vs Rogue Good Guys

The Die Hard series is a great old action series, still popular enough, in fact, that Bruce Willis checked himself out of the old folks’ home long enough to make 2007’s “Live Free or Die Hard” nearly twenty years after the original came out in the late 80s.

In a post-9/11 world, it’s hard not to like the idea of being able to put a world of hurt on terrorists of any stripe, whether international religious whack jobs or domestic whack jobs. Terrorism is terrorism and there’s nothing like the thought of being able to instill a sense of fear into those who would take away people’s collective peace. Rather than the traditional MMO fare of demons and otherworldly forces, a Die Hard MMO could score a big win with some good old human vs human action. The only caveat with this one and why it ended up at #5 was the “hitting a bit too close to home” thing with terrorism these days. Still, it’s an intriguing thought.

4) Red Dawn – Invaders vs Nationalists

It seems as if movie makers are having a hard time coming up with original ideas for movies as they are on the brink of releasing a 21st century “Red Dawn”. The original starred the late Patrick Swayze and featured a ragtag group of teenagers taking on the Red Army invading the U.S.A.

Picture this: Players choose a country and some become part of the national army. Then it’s up to the army, or to players choosing to be rank and file citizens who are dragged reluctantly into the fight, to defend their country from invaders or to choose to become invaders themselves. PvP mayhem FTW! Nothing would stir nationalistic pride more than taking on invaders bent on changing the way a country’s society and government function. Players could fight as part of a people’s army defending first their country of choice and then with their allies as they in turn are invaded. Can you imagine the factional warfare that could erupt? It makes the heart quiver with joy!

3) Blade Runner – Replicants vs Humans

In the first of my two IPs featuring Harrison Ford, I bring you “Blade Runner” which was originally filmed in 1982. “Blade Runner” features Ford as a police officer who has burned out in his day job to hunt down the increasingly human-like replicants created to perform menial labor on off-world sites.

Can you imagine replicants invading the Earth that are relatively indistinguishable from their human counterparts? Players would either take on the role of the invader replicant or the officer charged with “retiring” the created beings. Each side in the battle would be focused on the elimination of the other, on building and maintaining strongholds and working to dominate the world. Set in a futuristic world (2019, if you can believe it!), Blade Runner would be a natural for an MMO.

2) The Terminator – Humans vs Machines

Bots masquerading as humans would fill the game world. Players would be charged with finding ways to detect and eliminate the bots or, conversely, the bots would have to worm their ways into the human world in order to wreak havoc and eventually take over the planet. Humans would ‘go to ground’ and band together to seek out and destroy the machines. Add in time travel as did the movies and it’s a win for MMO players.

Oh and NOWHERE in the game will the line “Ah’ll be baack” be allowed to be uttered.

1) Cowboys vs Aliens – ‘Nuff Said

OK now, who hasn’t dreamed of an MMO based in the Wild West of the 1880s U.S.A.? What about someone making the next great space-themed MMO? Put the two together! Throw in the stars of this past summer’s blockbuster hit and it’s even more enticing. Daniel Craig? Harrison Ford? Horses? UFOs? Wickedly weaponized shackles? WHOOT!

Nothing speaks to my MMO heart more than the thought of Cowboys vs Aliens being brought to the MMOniverse. What’s not to like? Nothing says MAKE ME AN MMO like the image below:

OK so maybe none of these are exactly feasible for an MMO but a girl can dream, right? I’m not talking logistics here, just desperately wishing for something to shake up the MMO game world!

So what about you? What other movies would make great MMOs? Let us know in the comments!

The List: Top 5 MMO Immersion Breakers

MMORPGs are games that are supposed to give us a diversion from the humdrum of our daily lives. I understand that, I really do. I’m completely at peace with the idea that the games I play are supposed to take my mind off of bills to pay and the car troubles and all of those real world concerns. By and large, they do a great job.

I’m not one of those people who demands total immersion in my games either. I really don’t identify too closely with or ‘become’ Aniewiel or Kalia or any one of the hundreds of other characters I’ve created over the years. But even saying that, I do wish that developers would add just a touch of realism into some of the games I play. No, I don’t want to watch my characters taking showers or reading on the porcelain throne or wearing wrinkled clothes. But come on!

Here are five things that would go a long way to bringing more reality into my fantasy without being too over the top:

5.) Running Everywhere

Everyone in MMOs today is in such a hurry. Hurry to get to the next quest. Hurry to get back to the nearest town. Hurry to meet up with fellow raiders. See Sally run. Run, Sally, run!

What’s the rush? Our real life worlds are filled with the same type of angst as we rush from an appointment to work to school to the next thing. Why does this have to be carried into our off time as well? There’s a part of me that gets it. Most of us, because our real lives are full and rushed, don’t have a ton of time to game so we want to maximize the time we do have. Still, people zooming around like The Flash are a bit distracting. I can live with folks rushing around on mounts. That’s what they’re for, after all, but to see players running in 500 pounds of armor and weaponry without any threat of fatigue setting in is stretching it a bit.

One solution to this would be to implement something like Diablo and Diablo 2. At the beginning of the game, characters were pretty much 98 pound weaklings with little or no stamina. Players running all the time quickly found themselves walking, usually at inopportune moments. Over time and experience, a character’s stamina built up and eventually gave them the godlike ability to run most, if not all, of the time.  Simple, right?

4.) Mount Riding Indoors

This is something of a nitpicky concern but one that just makes my teeth hurt when I see it. What’s the deal with people being able to ride monstrously huge beasts, or any mount for that matter, indoors? Not only is reality stretched to the breaking point due to the sheer size of the creature and the lack of size of the establishment’s doorway, but it begs to be asked which poor schmuck will end up having to clean up after these behemoths.

Many games force riders off of mounts on entry into a building but they do so very inconsistently. For instance in Rift, players can ride all around the insides of both Sanctum and Meridian castles. These are the capital cities. These are the headquarters of the two factions yet hundreds if not thousands of players and their pooping mounts pass through the hallowed halls every day. Inexplicably, there are small out of the way establishments that force Rift players off their mounts. But this doesn’t happen in the capital cities. Go figure.

3.) Children

Where have all the children gone in our MMOs? Some games throw a few running children into quest hub towns and cities but children are missing as active participants in our MMOs by and large. While I doubt anyone would advocate seeing kids out battling the monsters inhabiting the world, the settings in most MMOs are rather poorer for not having children in them. Why not make them quest givers in towns and cities? Why not head into the local school for Career Day so the kids can “ooh” and “aah” over our character’s prowess? Child NPCs should be scattered throughout our game worlds. After all, without kids, why bother saving the world in the first place?

2.) Wonder Bras, G-Strings, Spiked Heels & Evening Wear in the Field

I have written about this before and it’s something that is a real game breaker for me. I don’t dress like a 2-bit hooker in real life and I do not want to dress like a streetwalker in my MMO s either. What is the obsession with placing female characters in “armor”, and I do use that term very loosely, that amounts to pasties and thong underwear? And don’t forget the six-inch spike heeled boots either.

One of the worst examples of this horrible trend was in the original Guild Wars. Think Mesmers here. I mean come on. My poor Mesmer had to run around in leather and lace with a party mask on. While I realize that MMOs are supposed to stretch the bounds of reality, this was simply too much.

And while I’m at it: What’s the deal with evening wear in MMOs? Do these people really think that some woman bent on saving the world is going to put on her gold lame elbow length gloves, spike heeled sandals and an evening gown? It seems so.

Do not give me that tired old “but most gamers are guys and want to look at something pretty” argument either. It’s a clear statistical fact that female gamers make up a more than significant percentage of gamers so that won’t work here. I don’t care if these clothing options are in game but at least make wardrobe slots that allow for a more realistic look, for Pete’s sake!

1) Oversized Weapons
