Recently, the folks at Eurogamer had a chance to spend a large tour of ArenaNet’s offices in Seattle. They had the opportunity to chat with ArenaNet senior vice president Randall Price to talk about the future plans they’ve got forGuild Wars 2.

Randall Price divided the future goals of Guild Wars 2 into 3 parts, that are short-term, medium-term and long-term plans. The short-term goals include the pre-purchase program and the upcoming beta weekends. Medium-term goals are related to a train of patches that will come out post-release of the game and then comes the long-term plans.
“We today know a number of the high-level features that we’re going to do, and expansion content for years to come,” said Price. “No, it’s not drilled down in a way that is - it’s all at the five-thousand foot level and above, from a big picture [perspective]. But every month we go through time, we get closer and it gets down and, OK, now we’re actually creating content for it.”

The official launch date for Guild Wars 2 is still unknown and according to ArenaNet co-founder Mike O’Brien, it depends on the results of the beta tests.

Guild Wars 2 Pledged Not to Sell Anything Evil in Cash Shop
Oct 28, 2011 guild wars|191views
At the Eurogamer Expo 2011 held last weekend, ArenaNet confirmed that there will be a cash shop for the highly anticipated Guild Wars 2. However, designer Colin Johanson stated that they won’t sell anything “evil” in the micro-transaction cash shop.

Here, the definition of evil is anything that can make your character more powerful, such as high-level equipments or weapons. Generally, the stuff sold in the cash shop is purely cosmetic and some extra bonus staff that doesn’t necessary for you to buy to play the game. “We like to do the - we like to call it the Is it Evil? test. Every micro-transaction that we do in the game, we have everyone in the company look at it and say Is it Evil? Is it really something we should be selling?” Colin Johanson explained.
It is known that Guild Wars 2 will also adopt the payment mode like its predecessor. You just need to buy the game and then there is no monthly subscription required. So far, the micro-transaction cash shop in Guild Wars is a success. But Guild Wars 2 has a much larger development scale and has been developed for almost 5 years, recouping the costs will be harder. However, Johanson was confident Guild Wars 2 would attract a lot more people than the predecessor, “And we think that that will offset a lot of the development costs in itself.”

According to Johanson, they are working hard to enrich the varieties of the cash shop, “If people want to support our company and want to purchase that stuff,” he added, “there will be more options for them to do so. And it’s totally up to them.

Guild Wars is an episodic series of multiplayer online role-playing games created by ArenaNet, a Seattle game development studio and a subsidiary of the South Korean game publisher NCsoft. Three stand-alone episodes and one expansion pack were released in the series from April 2005 to August 2007. All Guild Wars games run on the Microsoft Windows platform.
Guild Wars provides two main modes of gameplay—a cooperative role-playing component and a competitive player vs. player (PvP) component—both of which are hosted on ArenaNet’s servers. The games depict the history of the fictional fantasy world of Tyria, each campaign focusing on events in disjoint sections of the world, but roughly parallel in time. A player creates an avatar to play through the cooperative storyline of a campaign, taking on the role of a hero who must save Tyria from episode-specific antagonists. Players can group with other players and non-player characters, known as henchmen or heroes, to perform missions and quests found throughout the game-world. PvP combat is consensual, team based, and limited to areas designed for such combat. Players are allowed to create characters at maximum level and the best equipment specifically for PvP play, which is unusual for MMORPGs. ArenaNet hosts official Guild Wars tournaments where the most successful players and guilds may compete for the chance to play live at gaming conventions and win prizes up to 100,000 USD.
The games in the Guild Wars series were critically well received and won many editor’s choice awards, as well as awards such as best value, best massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), and best game. Guild Wars was noted for being one of the few commercially developed games in the MMORPG genre to offer online play without subscription fees, its instanced approach to MMORPG play, and the quality of the graphics and play for computers with low specifications. In February 2008, NCSoft announced that 5 million units of games in the Guild Wars series had been sold. The sequel, Guild Wars 2, was announced in March 2007. It will have updated graphics and gameplay mechanics, and will continue the original Guild Wars tradition of no subscription fees. No release date has been announced.
