Have you heard of Marina Orlova, aka HotForWords? She has two advanced degrees in philology, the study of words and their origins (I promised myself I’d say that part first) and is also one of the sexiest women on the internet. (This is official; just ask G4TV, who named her one of the sexiest five women on the web, or Wired.com, who dubbed her the #1 Sexiest Geek in the WORLD.)
She has her own website - http://www.hotforwords.com - a new book coming out, and one of the top 25 most frequently viewed channels on YouTube. English is the curvaceous Russian’s second language, but she knows more about it than any native I know. Marina racks up (no pun intended) an additional 3.5 million views every week for her fun, risqué videos about the origins of language. She also happens to be the new Dragon Oath spokesmodel.
As a Community Manager, I have a lot of fun jobs related to Marina. She’ll be appearing at our E3 booth (the ChangYou Chill Lounge) to sign autographs and promote the game, while wearing a costume from Dragon Oath. My first task related to Marina was to go through all of the game costumes and select one for our costume designer to create for her. Bikini bottoms are forbidden at E3 - all models must at least be wearing boyshorts - so I chose a gorgeous outfit with a bikini top, a blue skirt, and some pretty ribbons. She looks amazing in it. (By the way, I’ve seen Marina’s measurements - yes, they’re incredible, and no, I’m not telling!) Tomorrow, I get to buy her a cute pair of blue high heels to match the outfit. That’s why I’m in such a good mood - as a female, I love shopping for shoes. Especially when I’m being paid by the hour.
So here’s an interesting question raised by all of this. As mentioned before, E3 requires all female promoters to wear a certain amount of clothing. (These promoters are colloquially called “booth babes”; if you don’t know what “colloquialiy” means, Marina can tell you.) E3’s credibility took a hit over the “booth babe” controversy. Basically, a lot of companies were trying to compete to see who could have the least-dressed porn star draped lasciviously over their booth. (I’m sure Marina can also explain “lascivious.”) So E3 responded by telling all promoters and spokesmodels to cover up.
I’m doubtful that this was the proper response. In fact, speaking as a feminist, isn’t that a little offensive - to blame the bare flesh of the women as the cause of the problem? Shouldn’t we be yelling at the executives whose exploitative attitudes caused this controversy? Or the American culture which encourages young women to hone their beauty at any cost, and then actively seek to be exploited by these companies?
One thing I am sure of is that Marina Orlova, HotForWords, is not part of the problem. She is articulate, brilliant, and charming, which is all the more endearing for her being nice to look at. Her flirtatious attitude and “scandalous” outfits have gotten millions of people to watch her videos, and learn about language in the process. On top of that, she is an honest-to-God gamer geek. How many E3 spokesmodels can say that - much less “booth babes”?
Maybe the solution isn’t to cover the girls up, but to only promote games through partnerships with intelligent women who command respect no matter what they wear. As my boss told me once, “We will never have a ‘booth babe’ at this company who doesn’t play video games.” It’s a simple way to state a complicated problem, but still - food for thought.

Dragon Oath Best Class To Play? All Of Them.
Apr 20, 2010 Articles Recommend|703views
Players of Dragon Oath often argue over which of the nine classes is the “best” to play. There are frequent and passionate arguments about which class is the “most powerful,” which has the “best stats,” and which class “everyone should play.” I guess Karl Marx was right when he said that class struggles are unavoidable.
As a Dragon Oath insider, however, I know that the most effective team is one with a combination of classes. Cooperation between characters with different skill sets carries immediate and obvious benefits. Nowhere is this more evident than when fighting difficult bosses, such as the formidable Ancient Chess Soul that appears at the end of Chess Challenge.
The Shaolin are the “tanks” of Dragon Oath. They have the best possible chance of taking a blow from the Chess Soul and surviving, which means that while they’re engaging the boss their party members can survive long enough to damage her. But even the Shaolin are not invincible, so it is essential to have a member of the Lotus Order class (the healers) to cure damage and, in a pinch, resurrect the dead. While the Shaolin and Lotus Order are distracting the boss in this way, the Taoist (who has the best of the long-range attack spells) can blast away at her HP.

The Royalty are useful because they have skills that can cripple the Chess Soul’s MP, preventing her from using her most effective attacks, and can also physically attack from a safe distance. The Minstrels are masters of traps, but their most useful skill is a magical mark which can double the damage taken by Chess Soul. This is especially powerful when you add a Pyromancer to the team; they have the highest Physical Attack of any class, and have a buff to increase this stat even more.
With the Assassins and the Voodoo class, you get into advanced strategy; Assassins can attack from hiding, allowing them to deal damage without risking themselves, and the Voodoo class can steadily poison the Chess Soul from afar while decreasing her Strength and Intelligence (and thus the damage she does.) The Assassins also have a great buff that increases their chance of a Critical Hit. As for the Beggars Alliance, they have the highest evasion; they have the best chance of surviving the Chess Soul’s long-range attacks, which can otherwise devastate an entire team.
The maximum size of a group is six characters, so it’s impossible to bring all of these specialties to the fight. But it should be evident by now that any group with only one class will be less effective in boss battles.
In real life, it is the differences between us that make us strong. Humans are capable of incredible things through specialization of labor, and when we cooperate it’s amazing what we can accomplish. A well-designed game reflects this essential truth. So when people ask what class I think is the most powerful, I can say with confidence, “All of them.”

Dragon Oath Expansion Age of Destiny Preview
Jan 26, 2010 Articles Recommend|631views
Our Forum volunteer Kevin has been one of the 36 lucky players who have been chosen by the ChangYou team to enter Dragon Oath’s upcoming expansion Age of Destiny before the official launch, earlier than anyone else. He brings us this in-depth preview. Check out what he thinks of Age of Destiny!
I played the new Dragon Oath expansion and it seems pretty chill. They really added a lot of content this time around which was surprising, I was constantly busy with all of the new quests and events going on. The best things about the new expansion, in my opinion are the Artifact Weapons. It feels awesome to have an immensely powerful weapon that looks cool at the same time. It’s also nice that they added multiple ways to get those weapons, so that it doesn’t boil down to a dogpile of people trying to do the same quests.
The Yan Tomb instance is really challenging, but really rewarding at the same time. It’s like 9 levels deep with tons and TONS of enemies to mow through on your way to the final boss. In addition to those enemies, there’s a mini boss on each stage that blocks you from getting to the next level. Fighting King Yan himself is a grueling task that really requires you to be on your toes the entire fight. Not to mention the fact that your group has to be well equipped to deal with such a powerful boss. All in all, it was one of the best dungeons that I’ve ever played through in ANY game.

I spent a little time in that Ice Space zone and I think it’s a really cool idea that should be implemented into more games. It’s just a mellow zone where you can go to collect experience. Sometimes players want to get their consistent experience, but relax a bit at the same time. This was made for those people (myself included) and I definitely approve. The amount of money that you have to pay to get in is pretty fair too (I think it’s like 3 Gold), so you don’t really get robbed of your funds too badly.
I’ve always been a bit fan of PVP, so I decided to do the Arena Chest event one day and it turned out to be a lot of fun. All I had to do was group up with a few people and then we hopped right into the PVP zone. Once inside, I was shocked at how quickly I was thrown into an all out fight for my life. Tons of people were fighting it out for the huge treasure chest in the Arena and it eventually became a scramble to see who could stand next to the chest and defend it the longest. Honestly, doing that event was a breath of fresh air for a PVP enthusiast such as myself. Far too often, people are put in PVP situations where they’re expected to just mindlessly fight it out over nothing. It’s cool to finally see an objective that isn’t just “kill those guysâ€.
The coolest quest that I took part in was the Swallow’s Dock series. When I hopped into this quest I felt like I was taking part in an epic movie battle. Hopping from boat to boat in a race to protect a high ranking military soldier, scrambling to intercept bandits while fortifying defense structures, fighting off warlords with devastating magic attacks, this quest has it ALL. Even though the quest itself is challenging to complete, you never stop having fun, which is what makes it awesome in my opinion.

Overall, this new Dragon Oath content is gonna make a lot of players very happy. I think that these new editions are definitely something that will keep the veteran players engaged and bring in a lot of new players at the same time. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve spent a long time on a F2P MMO, but I’m having such a good time with Dragon oath that I really don’t even notice how quickly time is flying by. I encourage everyone to try this stuff out, it’s definitely worth it.

Jever EverJest, a player of the Free-to-Play Martial Arts MMORPG, Dragon Oath, revealed that his suggestion for the game’s upcoming major expansion was the chosen one. His idea Age of Destiny was picked by the game’s publisher, and he was very excited to know that he contributed to changing the face of gaming.
The Dragon Oath team recently announced that they were looking for some cool name ideas for their recent expansion. The expansion includes some very exciting content such as highly sought after new areas, extremely powerful weapons, unique pets, and access to several new events. After getting hundreds of submissions from very enthusiastic players, Jever EverJest’s was selected: Dragon Oath: Age of Destiny!
“It just seemed to fit, given the content that [is being] implemented in game, the opening of this content fulfills a destiny most players are waiting for,†he said.
Jever EverJest has been playing Dragon Oath since the end of Nov 09 - right after Open Beta began. “I was looking for a game to play and I came across an ad for D.O. on Facebook and I have been hooked ever since,†he said.
“This game has the most content I have seen in a MMO - the quest systems/pets/breeding/crafting/casting/sewing - it all reminds me of a MMO I used to play - which is most likely why I am hooked on it — the other MMO was Ultima Online, which I played for over 15yrs,†he said.
Jever EverJest has made an everlasting contribution to a game he loves playing, and you can too. Every player can make a difference!

Player Made a Newspaper for Dragon Oath

What is this?

Does Dragon Oath team send paper newsletters in the Internet Age?
This is a mock newspaper front page made by one of Dragon Oath’s players Karamon. He has enjoyed the in-game event “Amazing Race†so much that he wants to get the word out about this event to other players who may not know about it. Isn’t that cool?
The Amazing Race event started a few weeks ago in order to provide players with a chance to interact with GM’s in game and win some very cool, rare prizes.
The event pits all participants against each other in a battle of wits and speed. GM’s provide clues about locations, and players have to decipher the riddle and find the next clue! The first to the finish line is the winner of a very unique prize!
This event takes place every Friday at 4:30 PM server time next to Master Zhao in Da Li. There are no restrictions, so all players are welcome. It’s pure fun!
Check it out, and see if you can be the one that beats Karamon to the finish line this Friday!

Dragon Oath Review: A Female Perspective
Jan 10, 2010 Articles Recommend|258views
Dacchei, a 19-year-old college student, brings us this in-depth look into the popular martial arts fantasy F2P MMORPG Dragon Oath. Check out why thousands of female gamers are addicted to this game!
Being an avid gamer, I’ve played many, many free MMORPGs. Recently it’s been easier for me to jump from game to game, seeing basically the same content everywhere I went. But then I ran into a game that actually caught my eye and made me unable to quit playing it.
The first feature that caught my eye about Dragon Oath was its nine classes. These include classes that are commonly known in many games such as Taoist and Assassin, but then there were some classes I had never heard of before like Lotus Order and Pyromancer. Then, the next feature that I was attracted to was the Pet System. The Pet system on this game offered many different types of pets and also allowed pets to be much more than just an attractive sidekick. With pets, players are able to have another body to tank for them, attack with them or even heal them. Finally, the most unique feature of this game (for me) was the 24/7 events. Many of the events are called Intruders and Thieves. In these events you join a party and fight on an instance map for experience and items. These monsters give much more experience than the normal ones, and the events are quite enjoyable to do (in my opinion) because of the interaction with other players.
Recently Dragon Oath released its Christmas Events, much to everyone’s excitement. Some of the main items that people were looking forward to included the new level cap, new map, and new Christmas items. After logging in on the 17th, I was very impressed with the changes to Luo Yang. The snow made the game seem much more festive. Then I ran to see the new map, Silver Snowfield, that had just been opened to the public. This map was much like the other caves I had been to, however it was unique because it offered the new Penguin pet. Also, this map offered a new drop called ‘Monster Diary’ that would allow players to get their much sought after 2nd Class Fashion after collecting 20 diaries. After I was done exploring the new map and ringing the ‘Bell of Happiness’ (another new feature promoted by the mallet drops), I decided to check out the Token Shop. I have to say, I was incredibly impressed by the look of everything in the shop. All the new mounts and fashions looked amazing. However, what didn’t impress me were the prices. Being a broke college student, I knew I wouldn’t be able to buy anything in the shop. Still, one can’t help but hope that these items might be up for grabs one day as event prizes. : ) Some other disappointments that came along with this update were the low drop rates of a lot of the items, the level requirements for most of the activities were biased toward higher levels, and there were not enough new stuff/areas. Even though I enjoyed spending some time at snow field, within a few hours, I was back to my routine of doing rebels and thieves every hour. Also, it was odd that the only city to get a new wintery look was Luo Yang. Regardless though, the update did help bring a new “Christmassy†feel to the game and provide the first step into parts of Dragon Oath that have yet been added into the game.
Ultimately, Dragon Oath still has much more growing to do, but then again it also has a lot more content that has not been released in the US version yet. The community gradually increases every day, yet it’s still small enough to easily make friends with people from partying with them over and over again. In my opinion, it’s a good size because there are always more people to meet, yet after playing for a while you begin to recognize other people’s names. If you haven’t tried playing Dragon Oath yet, I highly recommend it. It offers enjoyable game play with tons of things to keep you busy, including raising pets, improving your life skills (crafting, mining, planting, fishing, etc.), and PvP events. PvP is a huge part of Dragon Oath and should inspire people to level faster or work harder on getting their equipment stronger. All the maps allow PvP, though some not without penalty. There are certain maps that do allow PvP without penalties, and there are also events, such as the Class Martial Battle, that allow you to test your strength against others. In the end, no matter how you decide to play your character, I believe that as long as you do what you enjoy doing, you will find this game to be an enjoyable way to spend your free time!

Dragon Oath: Catch a Turkey Pet for Thanksgiving!
Nov 25, 2009 Articles Recommend|723views
Dragon Oath will celebrate Thanksgiving by giving players a chance to catch their own turkey pet. Starting today, and running through December 3rd, players can travel to Pet Island to collect “turkey tickets†by killing rabbits, turtles, and swallows. They can also collect turkey tickets by killing bosses in the “Thief Raid†and “Intruders†events. These turkey tickets are extremely rare and will take a lot of dedication and killing to collect.
Once players have acquired a minimum of 10 tickets, they can trade the tickets in for a turkey meal.Right-click on your turkey meal, it will magically transform into your personal turkey pet!

Players will have until December 10th to exchange the turkey tickets for this seasonal pet.
As an extra Thanksgiving bonus, Dragon Oath also added a special “Roasted Corn†buff! World monsters and event bosses may drop delicious roasted corn when killed, which will give players assorted buffs that may increase attributes, physical attack, or spirit attack.
Plan wisely and divide your time between the two events – they are both fun and rewarding!
Happy hunting and Happy Thanksgiving!
